Therapy for Overcoming Trauma

your past is defining your future

You know just how heavy the past weighs on you. You know that you you’ve pushed it down. That you’ve denied it, ignored it, and told yourself didn’t matter.

But it does matter.

Because you know that it impacts the way you see yourself. That it limits you and what you see as possible in your life. That is shows up in your relationships and fuels are your insecurities and self doubts.

Your past, with all its weight, keeps you feeling stuck. You’re living a life that leaves you feeling unsatisfied at the end of the day.

You’ve lived with it lurking in your life for so long and you can’t imagine a life without it, but oh how you’d like to. You’re ready to start facing the past, because you recognize it’s standing in the way of your future.

understanding the past

We are shaped by all the experiences we have, good or bad. These experiences influence how we interact with others, how we show up in the world, what we believe ourselves capable of, and our general outlook on life.

The likelihood is that if you’re reading this and you’re nodding along, you’ve been through some stuff. Stuff that’s been pretty heavy. Stuff that’s had an outsized impact on your life. And in all likelihood, you’ve probably been dealing with it all alone.

The heavy stuff—the hard shit— often leave us feeling disconnected. Disconnected not just from the world, but also ourselves.

The past can so easily hijacked us and leave us feeling out of control. We cope as best we can. But we all know deep down that the ways we make ourselves feel better in the moment—scrolling, spending, substances, spacing out—often leave us feeling worse in the long run.

You often feel empty and you know why, but you aren’t sure how to start feeling differently.

Healing begins with understanding the past.

Understanding that the past it leaves its mark and understanding the ways its showing up in your life now. So that you can learn new ways of dealing with it that don’t make life harder on yourself.

And once you’re able to meet your past armed with tools of understanding and self-compassion, we can turn towards unpacking it. So that you can make peace with the past and move forward to a brighter, more connected future.

unpacking and healing from the past: trauma-focused therapy

At this point, life without the heavy weight of the past seems impossible.

Imagine a life where the past happened, but it does not dictate the present. Nor does it influence your future. A life where you are fully present. A life where you can notice and allow all feelings. A life where you let others really see you. A life where you can show up fully human and imperfect. A life where you feel whole and capable.

That life is possible.

In our work together, we’ll help you build that kind of life. We’ll do it by giving you the tools to face the past, make peace with it, learn any lessons you might need from it. Allowing your past to simply be one part of your story.

One way we’ll unpack the past is with EMDR.

EMDR is a somatic, nervous-system focused therapy that helps people connect with their inner wisdom. Allowing you to see the past not as you were then, but from what you know now.

An example of Kintsugi, a Japanese tradition where broken pottery is repaired with gold.

“The world breaks everyone and afterward many are strong at the broken places.
— Ernest Hemingway
